A family’s story.

Over the years many families have participated in Aboriginal Family Group Conferencing. This is a true family story.

  • AACAFS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) registered with NSW Office of Children’s Guardian (OCG) to deliver out-of-home-care (OOHC) services in NSW.

Founded in 2021 our purpose is to support, care for and protect vulnerable and at risk children and families, with a focus on improving the welfare and wellbeing of Aboriginal children, families and family life through the empowerment that comes from self-determination and culturally responsible support and education.

  • AACAFS has extended the existing AFGC work to design our Family Voice Family Choice program to support Aboriginal families to embrace this method, thereby preserving cultural integrity while interacting with contemporary child protection systems.

AACAFS Family Voice Family Choice is grounded in Aboriginal cultural values and practices. It honors the principles of self-determination, community responsibility, and collective decision-making. By embracing this method, Aboriginal families can reclaim their power and autonomy in decision-making processes concerning their children and young people.

  • AACAFS Family Voice Family Choice is most effective when used early in the child protection process, preferably before formal court proceedings. This allows for a more inclusive and collaborative approach to decision-making, reducing the need for court intervention and the potential removal of children from their families.

AACAFS Family Voice Family Choice can also be utilised at any stage of the child protection process, including during ongoing support, restoration and reunification after a child has been removed. In these cases, our program can be used as a tool for healing and repairing relationships between the family and child protection services.

  • AACAFS currently operates in all regions in NSW.
